Products
In Floatless, a Product is the foundational building block of your catalog. It represents a good or service that you sell to your customers. Unlike a simple line item on an invoice, a defined Product in Floatless enables powerful automation, such as auto-calculating taxes, enforcing consistent pricing, and tracking revenue categories.
Product Types
We support two distinct types of products to match your business model.
Standard Product
A single, standalone item.
- Examples: "Consulting Hour", "SaaS Seat", "T-Shirt".
Bundle
A combination of multiple standard products sold together as a single package.
- Example: A "New Employee Kit" bundle might contain 1 "Laptop" and 1 "Software License".
- Behavior: When you add a Bundle to an order, Floatless automatically tracks the individual components for reporting while presenting a single line item to the customer.
Key Attributes
When configuring a product, you will define several core controls:
Identity & Tracking
- SKU (Stock Keeping Unit): Your unique internal code (e.g.,
LIC-2024-ENT). This is critical for syncing with external ERPs or inventory systems. - Category: Grouping used for tax rules and reporting (e.g., "Software", "Professional Services").
Billing Configuration
- Unit Label: For usage-based billing, this defines what is being counted (e.g., "GB", "API Call", "Seat").
- Type:
- Good: A physical item (often taxable in the destination state).
- Service: A non-physical service (often follows different tax rules).
Pro Tip: Defining your Tax Category correctly at the Product level ensures that Floatless automatically applies the correct sales tax rates for every customer, regardless of where they are located.
